Shanahan suspends 2 more, Simmonds news

It’s getting tiring to post about suspensions again, but here we go, 2 more players to talk about.

First, Anaheim Ducks forward Jean-Francois Jacques has been suspended for the remainder of the preseason and for 5 regular-season games. Jacques left the bench on a legal line change and started a fight with Vancouver Canucks forward Mike Duco. Earlier in the game Duco bumped the Ducks goalie and Ryan Getzlaf dropped the gloves with Duco but it wasn’t much of a fight. So maybe Jacques wanted to try and give Duco a real beating for the goalie bump?

Second, Philadelphia Flyers forward Tom Sestito has been suspended for the remainder of the preseason and 2 regular-season games for an illegal hit from behind on New York Rangers forward Andre Deveaux.

Also in that Rangers-Flyers game, Rangers Sean Avery threatened to kill Claude Giroux, which Wayne Simmonds overheard and didn’t like.

Then during the scrum after Sestito hit Deveaux, Avery throws a cheapshot punch at Simmonds who is down on the ice. After the game Avery said that Simmonds called him a gay slur. Simmonds has denied it.

More news relating to Wayne Simmonds, as the London, Ontario police have found the person who threw a banana on the ice near Simmonds in a preseason game.

Police in London, Ont., announced Wednesday they have charged a man in connection with last week’s banana-throwing incident which took place during a preseason game between the Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers at the John Labatt Centre.

Christopher Moorhouse, 26, was identified as the person who tossed a banana on the ice while Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds, who is black, was taking his turn in the shootout.

London Police Chief Brad Duncan said Moorhouse has been charged with engaging in a prohibited activity under the Trespass Act. If convicted, he could be fined $2,000 (Canadian).

Duncan said the police reviewed the incident and determined it did not meet the threshold for charging Moorhouse with a hate crime. Mischief charges also did not apply.

Oilers and Rangers brawl during ‘Kids Day’ at MSG

In a game where heavyweights Steve MacIntyre and Derek Boogaard fought each other twice, you would think that would be the talk of the game, well leave it to Sean Avery to get the attention. Not a surprise. In the third period, MacIntyre and Boogaard squared off twice, with Boogaard getting the edge in the first one and the second fight was probably more of a draw. You can watch those fights down below.

Later in the third period, the fun started. The game was at 5-2 with the Rangers leading. Avery laid out Colin Fraser with a clean check and Ladislav Smid challenged Avery to fight. Avery declined twice and then decided to drop the gloves and got a quick punch on Smid which sent Smid to the ice. Some are calling it a sucker punch. I’m not sure it was a sucker punch but it is close to being one.

After the Smid-Avery fight they went to a commercial but when they came back the commentators tell us that all hell broke loose. On his way off the ice Avery was going to the runway and Ryan Whitney came over with some words for him and then Theo Peckham went over trying to get at Avery. That’s when everything broke out. Zack Stortini and Brandon Prust got together and had a long fight while Brian Boyle paired off with Peckham. For some reason Fraser was going at it with the Rangers bench, mainly Brandon Dubinsky. As Rangers players tried to get at Fraser from the bench, coach John Tortorella was trying to hold back Dubinsky and other Rangers. You can watch all the mayhem down below. I guess it’s too bad these teams only meet once this year. And this afternoon game was “Kids Day” at MSG, go figure.

Wisniewski gestures that Avery blows

Well here’s some Columbus day funny material. I was going to post a clip of this later but over at Kukla’s Korner they beat me to it. In today’s afternoon Rangers-Islanders game, still going on right now, in the first period right before they cut to commercial you can see Islanders defenseman James Wisniewski talking with Rangers agitator Sean Avery and then Wisniewski gesturing to Avery that he blows and you can see in the video below what I mean.

A look at Atlantic division team’s enforcers for the upcoming season

D.J. King vs Derek Boogaard

We’re going to take a look at all of the divisions and look to see who the enforcer(s) will be for each team in the upcoming 2010-11 NHL hockey season. We’re fans of NHL tough guys, as you can tell with this site, and we’re glad that the tough guy role is not gone from the game, despite all the rules that have tried to stop fighting. First we’ll take a look at the teams in the Atlantic division. So here we go…

The first team we’ll look at are the New Jersey Devils. Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond looks to be the Devils’ enforcer on the team. With the Devils current cap situation someone has to go. Rumors have Brian Rolston and/or Bryce Salvador going. If a forward goes it should definitely give Leblond a chance to keep a spot in the lineup and not be scratched. Last season Leblond played in 27 games and got into 8 fights.

Next up are the New York Islanders. In the off-season they signed forward Zenon Konopka, who last season led the league in fighting majors with 33 in 74 games, as a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning. I don’t really consider him a heavyweight but he can handle himself. The Islanders also have Trevor Gillies, who played in 14 games last season and had 5 fights. He’ll be fighting for a spot on the roster. What happened to Joel Rechlicz? Rechlicz played in 6 games and had 3 fights last season for the Islanders.

Next up are the New York Rangers and we all heard what they did this off-season. The Rangers signed Ex-Wild enforcer Derek Boogaard to a wild contract, four-years worth $6.6 million. Last season Boogaard had 9 fights in 57 games. He hasn’t scored a goal in 4 seasons. It will be interesting to see Boogaard against the Eastern conference teams now, considering if he dresses for most of the games. Will anyone fight him? Why would you? I can’t wait to see the first Rangers-Leafs game as there is a possible Boogaard vs Orr matchup. In the minors Orr handled himself pretty good vs the bigger Boogaard (if you search YouTube you can find the two fights I’m referring to). The Boogaard signing by the Rangers may even make Sean Avery braver (which the NHL does not need) and make him feel like he can do his antics and have Boogaard protect him. The Rangers also have Brandon Prust who can throw down with the middleweights. Last season Prust had 25 fights in 69 games (with the Flames and Rangers combined). Prust can actually play though and chip in some goals, as he had 5 goals last season.

Next up are the defending Eastern Conference champions, the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers signed Ex-Ranger Jody Shelley and he’ll be their enforcer this season. Shelley had 13 fights last season in 57 games with the Sharks and Rangers.

Next up are the Pittsburgh Penguins. It looks like Eric Godard will be their enforcer again this season. We just hope he gets to play in more games this season. Last season Godard had 8 fights in 45 games.

The next division we will look at is the Northeast division. Stay tuned for that post!

Sean Avery makes us laugh by taunting Maxime Talbot

Well I’m not a fan of New York Rangers’ agitator Sean Avery at all but seeing the below video of him making fun of Pittsburgh Penguins Maxime Talbot after a small scrum where Talbot flung his arms at Avery was hilarious.

If you missed the Montreal Canadiens vs San Jose Sharks game on Thursday then you missed another gutless and cheap play by Maxim Lapierre. He pushed Sharks’ forward Scott Nichol from behind into the boards after a breakaway chance. You can see that incident below. Lapierre was suspended for four games for that hit.
