Crosby fights, Carkner attacks, Polak pounds, and Brown destroys

Sidney Crosby roughs Kimmo Timonen and Matt Carkner attacks Brian Boyle

If you missed the NHL playoff games this weekend, well you have missed a whole lot of action, especially if you like hockey fights as we do.

Let’s start with the Penguins-Flyers game today. In the first period, with the Flyers up 3-1, Sidney Crosby took some extra whacks at Ilya Byzgalov’s glove after the whistle which brought Claude Giroux in and they had a scrum. After that broke up, Crosby decided to push Jakub Voracek’s glove away from him as Voracek tried to pick it up. Kimmo Timonen had some words for Crosby and Crosby grabs Timonen and everyone joins in. Giroux gets Crosby and they wrestle each other, then Crosby throws a punch once the lineman comes in, and then they both throw an uppercut and they go down to the ice. Kris “diver” Letang drops the gloves with Kimmo Timonen and they get thrown out of the game for being the second altercation.

Not too long after the Crosby-Giroux fight, Brayden Schenn laid out Paul Martin with a clean hard check and Arron Asham didn’t like it so he crosschecked Schenn in the throat and then punched him while he was down on the ice.

In the third period with the game in control by the Flyers with a 7-4 lead, James Neal first hit Flyers Sean Couturier with a cheap blindside hit. Then Neal goes high on Giroux which then starts a big scrum and more fights.

Arron Asham KOs Jay Beagle

Everyone is talking about the fight last night where Penguins Arron Asham KO’d Capitals Jay Beagle and then when Asham was skating to the penalty box he made a knock out gesture and then a sleeping gesture. Some are calling for Asham to be suspended which is dumb in my opinion. Maybe fine him but suspend him? What is the league turning into if they suspend him? Donald Brashear in his Vancouver playing days use to gesture all the time after fights, wiping his hands.

Asham isn’t known as a classless player but those gestures definitely were classless. I can see doing the knockout gesture but the sleeping bed time gesture, he put some thought into that lol. Did he have this planned or something? Well maybe Matt Cooke is rubbing off on him.

Free agency opens, teams go nuts signing players

Friday was July 1st, the first day of free agency and we saw lots of signings take place. For a second I thought it was pre-lockout with some long-term signings and big contracts. Below is a look at who signed where (the bigger named players are in bold). Warning, this is a long post. You can check regularly on what’s going on around the league with signings on TSN here.

Penguins sign Arron Asham

Yesterday it was announced that the Pittsburgh Penguins have signed Arron Asham to a one-year contract. Asham had 14 fights last season with the Philadelphia Flyers

Asham (5-foot-11, 205 pounds) played with the Philadelphia Flyers the past two seasons. He posted 24 points (10G-14A) and 126 penalty minutes in 72 games in 2009-10. Asham chipped in a career-high four goals and seven points in 23 contests in the playoffs to help Philadelphia win the Eastern Conference title and earn a berth in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1997.
