Russian referee tries to fight player after hit

Here’s something you don’t see everyday in hockey. I saw this during the Toronto-Montreal game on Saturday and I had to post. In a Russian hockey league, a player hit a referee and the referee then took off his helmet and tried to fight the player. A player from the other team tried to act like a referee and get between the two. Watch the incident below.

The close up they show of the player who hit the referee, doesn’t that look like an older version of Toronto Maple Leafs forward Phil Kessel?

Orpik knees Stepan, Tortorella goes off on Penguins

If you haven’t seen it yet, you gotta watch the post game interview with Rangers coach John Tortorella. First though, in the Rangers-Penguins game, Penguins Brooks Orpik hit Rangers Derek Stepan with a cheap dirty knee-on-knee hit. In the post-game interview, John Tortorella went off on the Penguins.

John Tortorella post-game, Rangers vs Penguins

“It’s a cheap, dirty hit. I wonder what would happen if we did it to their two whining stars over there. I wonder what would happen. So I’m anxious to see what happens with the League over this. Just no respect among players. None. It’s sickening.”

“It’s one of the most arrogant organizations in the league. They whine about this stuff all the time, and look what happens.”

“It’s ridiculous. But they’ll whine about something else over there, won’t they, starting with their two (expletive) stars.”

Tortorella is being honest there. What would happen if Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin were hit with the same hit? We’ll see what happens with Orpik, if he gets any disciplinary action for his dirty hit.

Kaleta gets decked and Subban’s big hip check

Last night there were two big hits that stood out. First in the Buffalo-Toronto game, Sabres cheapshot artist Patrick Kaleta got a taste of his own medicine as he got absolutely decked from Leafs Nikolai Kulemin.

Then in the St. Louis-Montreal game, Canadiens P.K. Subban laid a big hip check on Blues Barret Jackman.

Rangers Artem Anisimov shoots Tampa goalie, scrum ensues

Rangers Artem Anisimov scores a goal and then gestures that he’s shooting Lightning’s goalie Mathieu Garon. The Lightning players didn’t like it and tried to go after Anisimov. Brandon Dubinsky wound up having a crap fight with Marc-Andre Bergeron. Steven Stamkos gets a gloved punch in at Anisimov. The next time these two teams meet should be interesting.

Maybe Anisimov was trying to do his best Teemu Selanne “glove shooting” celebration, but for some reason he pointed at the opposing goalie, and it went terribly wrong. Not a smart move on his part.

Clutterbuck punches linesman during fight with Lapierre

So yesterday in the Canucks-Wild game, during a wrestling match between Cal Clutterbuck and Maxim Lapierre, two guys that every other team hates, the linesman for some reason gets onto the back of Lapierre and Clutterbuck swings and hits the linesman right in the face. Watch it below.

One linesman should not be trying to break up a fight if the other linesman isn’t there. If you’re going to do that then be prepared that you may get hit. A linesman getting punched in a fight, yea that happened last year too with Sharks Jason Demers. Linesmen should let the players go and finish what they started instead of jumping in.

Daniel Briere stops during shootout and scores goal

What the f was that? I don’t know how they called Daniel Briere’s shootout goal legal after he stopped and stepped around Johan Hedberg to score on an empty net. But I guess the puck didn’t stop? That was really close. What do you think? I was hoping a Devils player would do the same but they didn’t. I bet you will see more of this now during shootouts.

Joe Thornton calls Rangers “soft,” Tortorella responds “shut up”

After Monday night’s Sharks-Rangers game, Joe Thornton was quoted calling the New York Rangers as “soft.” Thornton finished the game with 1 assist, was -1 and had 0 hits and 0 blocked shots.

“To be honest with you, they were probably the softest team we played against on this road trip,” said Joe Thornton. “We played some good teams, and I think we probably should have beat these guys, to be honest with you.” Source: csnbayarea.com

When told after the game what Joe Thornton said, Rangers coach John Tortorella responded “Joe said that? Wonderful.”

Today Rangers coach John Tortorella had some comments about Thornton’s comments.

“Yeah it caught me off-guard when it was brought up after the game,” Tortorella said at the team’s Greenburgh practice facility Tuesday morning. “It surprised me, and I’ve never heard a player say that. Joe’s a heck of a player, but here’s a player popping off about our team, and Joe hasn’t won a g–damn thing in this league. He could go down as a player, being one of the better players in our league never to win anything. So what he should do is just shut up. It was uncalled for, it was classless, and I’ve never had it happen like that before.” Source: nydailynews.com

Oh it’s too bad these two teams don’t play each other again this season. So big Joe is again opening his mouth, as last season he said that Boston Bruins players don’t get suspensions. What will Joe say next? Who knows. Something he may never say is “I won the Stanley Cup.” Maybe Thornton should take Tortorella’s advice and shut up and play the game.

Dion Phaneuf and Cory Sarich throwing big hits

Over the weekend we saw two big hits that stood out. First there was Toronto Maple Leafs Dion Phaneuf destroying Ottawa Senators rookie Stephane Da Costa with an open ice hit, which looked similar to vintage Scott Stevens. Video below of Phaneuf’s big hit.

The second big hit was Calgary Flames Cory Sarich nailing Pittsburgh Penguins cheapshot artist Matt Cooke with a questionable hit. Video below of Sarich’s hit but the video quality isn’t good at all so it’s hard to see the replay.

Hey it’s Matt Cooke so it’s a clean hit. :)

*Update: I forgot about New York Rangers Ryan Callahan’s big hit on Anaheim Ducks Lubomir Visnovsky and the video of that hit is below. Another clean big hit.
