Fight of the year candidate: Mike Brown vs Kris Newbury

We have a fight of the year candidate that happened tonight in the Leafs-Rangers game with Mike Brown throwing down with Kris Newbury. They both exchanged punches without trying to block any and swung away. Newbury went down to his knees from punches and got back up to go down again. Wow what a fight! Both guys were throwing bombs and obviously Brown’s punches landed.

Panthers trade with Canucks includes David Booth

Today the Florida Panthers made a trade that has a lot of people scratching their heads. Well maybe Panthers GM Dale Tallon is trying to get the #1 pick next season in the draft, who knows. The Florida Panthers have traded David Booth, Steve Reinprecht and a third-round pick in 2013 to the Vancouver Canucks for Mikael Samuelsson and Marco Sturm.

“A lot of things come into play,” Tallon said of the trade, which was announced a few minutes before the Panthers’ home game against the New York Islanders and not long after the Canucks’ 3-2 OT win against Minnesota in Vancouver. “We’re in the performance business, and I was not happy with our team’s performance, especially the last two games. I wasn’t going to sit still and let this fester and I want to send a message and I want to make changes and I want to get better.

“We felt as far as an organization we get two top NHL players and it allows David to rekindle his career and go to a winning team in Vancouver and regain the touch that he had in previous years.”

“They’re two useful, NHL top-notch people that can play,” Tallon said of Sturm and Samuelsson, both of whom are on the final year of their contracts. “They’re solid defensively and offensively.

Eric Boulton sends Douglas Murray down to the ice with one punch KO

On Friday we saw a big Devils Eric Boulton punch send Sharks Douglas Murray down to the ice. You usually don’t see many KOs in hockey fights. I’m sure there are a lot of players cheering when they saw that, since Murray is known for his big hits and sometimes cheap hits.

Brian McGrattan is back, fights Cam Janssen in marathon bout

featured_janssen_vs_mcgratton

It didn’t take long for Brian McGrattan to make his presence felt for his new team, the Nashville Predators. On Saturday, in his second game for the Predators he dropped the gloves with Devils Cam Janssen and they had a long marathon bout with both guys exchanging punches and not really having any defense. Both guys were smiling and kept throwing until they were dead tired. McGrattan dominated early and Janssen came back at the end, but I don’t know how much those punches by Janssen had on them near the end. It’s great to see McGrattan back in the NHL. Watch the long fight below.

Arron Asham KOs Jay Beagle

Everyone is talking about the fight last night where Penguins Arron Asham KO’d Capitals Jay Beagle and then when Asham was skating to the penalty box he made a knock out gesture and then a sleeping gesture. Some are calling for Asham to be suspended which is dumb in my opinion. Maybe fine him but suspend him? What is the league turning into if they suspend him? Donald Brashear in his Vancouver playing days use to gesture all the time after fights, wiping his hands.

Asham isn’t known as a classless player but those gestures definitely were classless. I can see doing the knockout gesture but the sleeping bed time gesture, he put some thought into that lol. Did he have this planned or something? Well maybe Matt Cooke is rubbing off on him.

Dion Phaneuf and Cory Sarich throwing big hits

Over the weekend we saw two big hits that stood out. First there was Toronto Maple Leafs Dion Phaneuf destroying Ottawa Senators rookie Stephane Da Costa with an open ice hit, which looked similar to vintage Scott Stevens. Video below of Phaneuf’s big hit.

The second big hit was Calgary Flames Cory Sarich nailing Pittsburgh Penguins cheapshot artist Matt Cooke with a questionable hit. Video below of Sarich’s hit but the video quality isn’t good at all so it’s hard to see the replay.

Hey it’s Matt Cooke so it’s a clean hit. :)

*Update: I forgot about New York Rangers Ryan Callahan’s big hit on Anaheim Ducks Lubomir Visnovsky and the video of that hit is below. Another clean big hit.
