Sharks-Wild big trade: Heatley for Havlat

The San Jose Sharks and Minnesota Wild have pulled off another big trade with each other (the first one was the Brent Burns trade). The Sharks have traded forward Dany Heatley to the Wild for forward Martin Havlat.

When you don’t produce in the playoffs like you do during the season this is what happens sometimes. Heatley, who had 3 goals, 9 points in 18 playoff games this past season, is now gone and Havlat comes in who hasn’t been in the playoffs since winning the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in ’08-’09.

Sharks GM Doug Wilson said this about Havlat:

“He’s a hockey player that wants to play in big situations and that is a thing that we think is an important part of his makeup,” Wilson said.

Leafs and Predators make trade

On Sunday the Toronto Maple Leafs and Nashville Predators made a 4-player trade. The Predators sent forward Matthew Lombardi and defenseman Cody Franson to the Leafs for forward Robert Slaney and defenseman Brett Lebda.

The deal also includes a fourth-round pick – Nashville will acquire Toronto’s 2013 fourth-rounder if Lombardi plays 60 or more regular-season games over the course of the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, while Toronto will acquire Nashville’s 2013 fourth-rounder if Lombardi does not play 60 games during the next two campaigns.

This is more of a salary dump by Nashville than anything. If Lombardi can stay healthy and produce for the Leafs, then this trade is a steal for the Leafs.

Brad Richards signs and more signings around league

The biggest news on July 2nd was when Brad Richards signed with the NY Rangers for 9-years $60M (an average of $6.66M per year). There were some other signings that happened:

Tim Connolly signed a 2-year $9.5M contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs (average of $4.75M per year). This is a big contract for a guy who can’t stay healthy and didn’t show up in the playoffs last season. Good luck Toronto with him.

Anthony Stewart signed with the Carolina Hurricanes for 2-years $1.8M ($900K average per year).

Simon Gagne signed with the Los Angeles Kings for 2-years $7M ($3.5M average per year).

Ian White signed with the Detroit Red Wings for 2-years $5.75M ($2.875M average per year).

Tomas Vokoun signed with the Washington Capitals for 1-year $1.5M. Good signing by the Capitals. Vokoun should get them further in the playoffs.

Rick Rypien signed with the Winnipeg Jets for 1-year $700K.

Free agency opens, teams go nuts signing players

Friday was July 1st, the first day of free agency and we saw lots of signings take place. For a second I thought it was pre-lockout with some long-term signings and big contracts. Below is a look at who signed where (the bigger named players are in bold). Warning, this is a long post. You can check regularly on what’s going on around the league with signings on TSN here.
