Islanders vs Flyers mayhem

Tonight’s New York Islanders vs Philadelphia Flyers game got wild as some 6-1 games can. In the second period, Zenon Konopka and Dan Carcillo had a long fight trading punches. A little later Flyers Trent Hunter got thrown out of the game for a boarding major as he injured defenseman Andrej Meszaros with a hit. In the third period Konopka and Carcillo had round 2 where Konopka threw most of the punches. Later in the third period, Islanders Trevor Gillies got a triple roughing penalty (3 minors) and a game misconduct. I did not see it or know what happened there. With a minute left in the game things broke out as off a faceoff Islanders Frans Nielsen was talking to Daniel Briere at the faceoff circle. I guess Briere didn’t like what he said so he does what he’s known for, he uses his stick and after the puck dropped, Briere cross checked Nielsen in the head with his stick. Then everyone got into it and grabbed each other, even goalie Rick DiPietro wanted to fight Briere and even Carcillo. Wild game here and guess what, they meet each other next Saturday. It should be a good one. I found videos for all of these incidents except for the Gillies roughing.

Deryk Engelland bloodies Jody Shelley

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Deryk Engelland seems to be the real deal when talking about NHL tough guys. He knocked down Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer Colton Orr two weeks ago and on Friday he bloodied Philadelphia Flyers enforcer Jody Shelley. If you missed it watch the video below. Other enforcers should take note and don’t take Engelland lightly.

Derek Boogaard finds dance partners

Lots of people have been saying that New York Rangers enforcer Derek Boogaard may have a hard time finding opponents to drop the gloves with but the past few days he has found two. First he dropped the gloves with Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer Colton Orr on Thursday and then last night he dropped the gloves with Boston Bruins enforcer Shawn Thornton.

Where’s Ryan Miller’s outrage over Vanek hit?

Last night in the Ottawa Senators-Buffalo Sabres game, Sabres forward Thomas Vanek got a 2-minute boarding penalty for hitting Senators agitator Jarkko Ruutu from behind into the boards/glass. Because of his reputation, Ruutu got a diving penalty on the play, but if you watch the video below it doesn’t appear that Ruutu dived. It looks like Ruutu didn’t even see Vanek coming to hit him.

Thomas Vanek’s hit from behind on Jarkko Ruutu (October 22, 2010)

This hit is somewhat similar to the hit that Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson put on Sabres forward Jason Pominville, which caused Pominville’s head to hit the glass and he sustained a concussion from. You can watch the video below of the hit. Both hits come from a blind side spot and are near the boards. Sabres goalie Ryan Miller went off and demanded that the NHL set a precedent and suspend Hjalmarsson for a long time. We all know that Hjalmarsson got 2 games for that hit.

So we ask where is Ryan Miller’s outrage on this hit? Will he say nothing because Vanek is a teammate? Probably. Will Vanek be suspended for this hit? Who knows with the NHL and their discipline actions. All I know is that there have been many incidents so far this season.

Oilers get cheerleaders

TSN is reporting that the Edmonton Oilers will be the first Canadian team to get cheerleaders. I’m guessing somewhere Colorado Avalanche goalie Craig Anderson is happy about this move. Nice move by the Oilers to try and distract Anderson and maybe Taylor Hall can score his first goal. I’m just joking Oilers fans, calm down.

Rypien suspended for 6 games

Well Puckhead Mike posted about the Rick Rypien incident and today Rypien met with the NHL. Over at Kuklas Korner they’re reporting that the Vancouver Canucks forward has been suspended for 6 games and the Canucks have been fined $25,000 for the incident.

“Prior to each season, all clubs and players are advised that under no circumstances are club personnel permitted to have physical contact with fans, or enter, or attempt to enter the stands,” Commissioner Gary Bettman said. “We hold NHL players to a high standard, and there simply is no excuse for conduct of this nature. Fortunately, this incident is not typical of the way NHL players conduct themselves and is not typical of the way Mr. Rypien had conducted himself during his career.”

I think 6 games is fair and right. I have to say though I was expecting for the NHL to go wild and give him more games, but I think this is right. What do you think? Too few games? Too many games? Or just right?

The Rick Rypien vs fan incident

By now you’ve all seen it. I thought AdamBruinsFan may post about this but he hasn’t so I’ll take a jab at this incident. After watching the incident numerous times it’s clear that Rick Rypien is wrong as he grabbed and pushed a fan who apparently said to him “Way to be professional” (source) while he was getting a misconduct. You can watch the incident below.

After reading other hockey blogs and reports, this fan is apparently a 28-year old (who cares what his name is, I’ll get to that later), although he looked like a kid in the video. While watching this incident it did remind me of the Rob Ray incident with a fan on the ice as Ray pounded the crap out of a Quebec fan who went on the ice and over to the Sabres bench back in 1992. I searched online but I only found that he wasn’t suspended and fined $7,000. I do not know if that is true or not though. The NHL has changed a lot since 1992 so I expect Rypien to get suspended even though he didn’t really rough up the fan. The Rypien incident is bad PR for the NHL so Colin Campbell and whoever else will give him… well who knows how many games to sit.

One of PuckDaddy‘s many blog posts about this incident includes some info from TSN about other incidents that included fans:

In 2004, Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis was fined $100,000 and given a one-week suspension by the league for an altercation with a season ticket holder.
[In 2000-01], Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matthew Barnaby received a four-game suspension for an incident with a fan in Florida…

Another site was trying to compare this incident with the NBA’s incident with fans and Ron Artest and Stephen Jackson. Are you crazy? Did you actually watch that incident with Artest? And no this incident is not as bad as when Mike Milbury went into the stands and hitting someone with their own shoe incident. Video below of that incident if you’ve never seen it before.

Now about what I said above about not mentioning this fan’s name. Well I’m taking that position to not name the fan and give him anymore publicity. PuckDaddy has a post with the fan’s quotes where he says that he is “definitely seeking legal representation. … I was assaulted, that’s just the bottom line.

It’s his position to do that, but come on. Assaulted? Why don’t you let Rypien meet you outside so then he can really assault you. That’s a joke. Jackass wake up! You weren’t assaulted. And no that’s not the bottom line, you got grabbed and pushed by a professional athlete who makes possibly ten times what you do or ever will. You smell money and you’re going to try and get some. Now that’s the bottom line. You may see more future incidents like this because hey why not, right? Why not try and make some money off of someone else. Talk crap to athletes and dare them to touch you and then scream assault.

I’m no lawyer of course. But I got to thinking. Uh oh maybe I should have stopped lol. But if Rypien is sued or whatever by this fan, can Rypien blame the Minnesota Wild for not having protection around the area he “works” at. In the video you can see the fan could have probably got down at the Canucks bench if he wanted to.

Rypien has been suspended indefinitely today pending a hearing.

Old time hockey with the Big Bad Bruins going after a fan who grabbed a Bruins player stick back in 1979. Mike Milbury hits the fan with the fan’s shoe! Priceless stuff we will never see again.

Parros, Brown, Gillies means battle of the staches

It looks like Anaheim Ducks enforcer George Parros is going to have some competition this season for who has the best stache in the NHL. Besides Parros here are two other NHL players with noticeable staches I have seen so far. If you know of another please leave a comment and let us know.

The competition is with Toronto Maple Leafs lightweight Mike Brown and New York Islanders enforcer Trevor Gillies. Below are pictures from each player’s profile from NHL.com. Who’s got the best stache? Anyone not here that should be?

Shane Doan suspended for 3 games for hit

Today the NHL suspended Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan for his late hit on Anaheim Ducks forward Dan Sexton. You can watch the hit below.

Phoenix Coyotes forward Shane Doan has been suspended for three games and will forfeit $73,387.11 in salary as a result of delivering an illegal check to the head of Anaheim Ducks forward Dan Sexton in a game Sunday night, the NHL announced Monday.

“Doan delivered a late hit from the blind side to the head of an unsuspecting opponent,” NHL Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell said. “While it was fortunate that Sexton did not suffer an injury, the message should be clear that this is the type of hit that we want out of our game.” (Source: NHL.com)

Two douchebags: Patrick Kaleta and Maxim Lapierre

Last night we got to see two of the NHL’s bigger douchebags in the league “play their game”, with the Buffalo Sabres Patrick Kaleta and Montreal Canadiens Maxim Lapierre. They are both players who will throw cheap shots and do things to get under your skin but will rarely drop the gloves and answer the bell for their actions.

First douchebag up is Patrick Kaleta and his actions in the Sabres-Devils game. The video below shows Kaleta’s actions in last night’s game. First Kaleta is called for a charging penalty on Devils’ Mark Fraser, then two headbutt attempts on Devils’ Travis Zajac and a nice overreacting dive (watch Kaleta throw himself backwards, I give that 10 stars, Sean Avery would be proud of him) from a push by Zajac. Nice try by Kaleta to try to sneak those headbutts in but you can clearly see he is trying to headbutt Zajac twice there. What a joke this guy is.

Next up is douchebag Maxim Lapierre and his actions in the Canadiens-Lightning game. The video below shows the cheap hit he put on Lightning forward Steve Downie. The hit he put on Downie reminded me of his hit on Scott Nichol last season, although yesterday’s hit wasn’t as severe as the one on Nichol was, but Lapierre likes pushing guys from behind into the boards. There’s no need to push a guy from behind into the boards like that. Lapierre got 2 minutes for roughing, nothing for that cheap hit. Dumb refs said they would have called a penalty if Downie was hurt. That’s stupid.

Some comments from Downie and Steven Stamkos on the cheap hit:

Lightning RW Steve Downie said the hit put on him from behind and into the side boards Wednesday by Canadiens C Maxim Lapierre was “dirty” and that “I should have known it was coming” because LaPierre “is the type of guy who would do something like that.”

Steven Stamkos called it “a dangerous hit” and asked the referees why Lapierre was not thrown out of the game. “He said if Downs would have been hurt, (Lapierre) would have gotten tossed,” Stamkos said.

If the NHL really wanted to send a message and get this type of garbage out of the game then both of these players should be suspended for their actions last night. This league is getting ridiculous with the cheap stuff going on.
