Sidney Crosby roughs Kimmo Timonen and Matt Carkner attacks Brian Boyle

If you missed the NHL playoff games this weekend, well you have missed a whole lot of action, especially if you like hockey fights as we do.

Let’s start with the Penguins-Flyers game today. In the first period, with the Flyers up 3-1, Sidney Crosby took some extra whacks at Ilya Byzgalov’s glove after the whistle which brought Claude Giroux in and they had a scrum. After that broke up, Crosby decided to push Jakub Voracek’s glove away from him as Voracek tried to pick it up. Kimmo Timonen had some words for Crosby and Crosby grabs Timonen and everyone joins in. Giroux gets Crosby and they wrestle each other, then Crosby throws a punch once the lineman comes in, and then they both throw an uppercut and they go down to the ice. Kris “diver” Letang drops the gloves with Kimmo Timonen and they get thrown out of the game for being the second altercation.

Not too long after the Crosby-Giroux fight, Brayden Schenn laid out Paul Martin with a clean hard check and Arron Asham didn’t like it so he crosschecked Schenn in the throat and then punched him while he was down on the ice.

In the third period with the game in control by the Flyers with a 7-4 lead, James Neal first hit Flyers Sean Couturier with a cheap blindside hit. Then Neal goes high on Giroux which then starts a big scrum and more fights.

Orpik knees Stepan, Tortorella goes off on Penguins

If you haven’t seen it yet, you gotta watch the post game interview with Rangers coach John Tortorella. First though, in the Rangers-Penguins game, Penguins Brooks Orpik hit Rangers Derek Stepan with a cheap dirty knee-on-knee hit. In the post-game interview, John Tortorella went off on the Penguins.

John Tortorella post-game, Rangers vs Penguins

“It’s a cheap, dirty hit. I wonder what would happen if we did it to their two whining stars over there. I wonder what would happen. So I’m anxious to see what happens with the League over this. Just no respect among players. None. It’s sickening.”

“It’s one of the most arrogant organizations in the league. They whine about this stuff all the time, and look what happens.”

“It’s ridiculous. But they’ll whine about something else over there, won’t they, starting with their two (expletive) stars.”

Tortorella is being honest there. What would happen if Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin were hit with the same hit? We’ll see what happens with Orpik, if he gets any disciplinary action for his dirty hit.

Penguins and Flyers coaches yelling

When you look for trouble, you’re going to find it. Don’t you just love when Sidney Crosby goes around taking shots at people and then when someone takes a shot at him, he can’t take it, and he whines and whines instead of going after that player. That’s what happened in Saturday’s Flyers-Penguins game where Sidney Crosby took a shot at Brayden Schenn and then after the whistle, Brayden Schenn cross-checked Crosby and Crosby fell right down on the ice. Yes Crosby was cross-checked but he made it look real good as he fell down to the ice to make sure the refs noticed him.

During that break, the refs looked at replays and called a good goal for the Penguins so the penalty to Schenn didn’t stay because of the reviewed good goal. So Crosby didn’t like that so he whined and whined some more.

Late in the third period, Joe Vitale hits Daniel Briere with a hard clean hit in the middle of the ice and all hell breaks loose as the Flyers try to get at Vitale. Even Flyers coach Peter Laviolette stands on the bench yelling at Penguins coach Dan Bylsma and Penguins Tony Granato stands on the bench too. On the ice Wayne Simmonds fights Deryk Engelland, Aaron Asham throws some punches at Schenn who was being held by a Penguins player, and Craig Adams and Marc-Andre Bourdon have a wrestling match.

Even Scott Hartnell was having fun with Hulk Hogan in the stands. Oh wait, that’s not Hulk Hogan?

Devils vs Rangers line brawl to start the game

Monday night, off the opening faceoff in the New Jersey Devils-New York Rangers game, we had three fights happen at the same time. It looked like old-time hockey out there and we loved it! Check it out below. It was Ryan Carter vs Stu Bickel, Cam Janssen vs Brandon Prust and Eric Boulton vs Mike Rupp. Carter hits his face on the ice and gets a bloody nose.

Reed Low vs Ryan VandenBussche 2001 slugfest

This was a real good fight with both Reed Low and Ryan VandenBussche trading punches but Reed Low got more in and you could tell who won this fight at the end of it as Vandenbussche was a bloody mess. What a fight! Now that’s a hockey fight. This was one of the best fights of the 2000-2001 season.

Harvey vs Roberts and Marshall vs Odjick in 1996

A look back at two fights from 1996 in a Dallas Stars-Vancouver Canucks game. Todd Harvey nailed Pavel Bure and David Roberts went after him but Harvey handles himself well and gets the better of Roberts. As that fight ends Gino Odjick goes at it with Grant Marshall and they have a really good fight with Marshall getting the edge in that one and blooding Odjick as well. Some good old-time hockey back in ’96.

Is this the hit of the year?

Outmatched Derek Dorsett instigates fight with giant John Scott

With his team being blown out and his team sucking during the season, after a Blue Jackets timeout, Derek Dorsett instigated a fight with Blackhawks heavyweight John Scott and got the first punch in, as Scott didn’t want to fight him, and then it was all Scott as he pounded Dorsett down to the ice. It takes a lot of balls to go after someone who is almost a foot taller than you, Dorsett is listed as 6’0″ and Scott is listed as 6’8″. I don’t get the Blackhawks broadcast laughing and making fun of Dorsett trying to do something to get his team show some kind of emotion. I would rather a player do that than do nothing at all.

Fight of the year candidate: Brian McGrattan vs Ryan Reaves

Saturday night we saw a good heavyweight bout between Predators Brian McGrattan and Blues Ryan Reeves. Both guys looked to land some but Reaves cut McGrattan open above his left eye. I think I have to give this one a draw, maybe edge to McGrattan, what do you guys think? Reaves kept ducking and throwing while McGrattan didn’t try to duck anything and kept throwing. Holy jumpin!

Jim Vandermeer vs Jared Boll 2 times in 1 game

Last Tuesday we saw a rarity that we don’t see much anymore in hockey, two guys fighting twice in a game against each other. In the Blue Jackets-Sharks game, Jim Vandermeer and Jared Boll fought twice, once in the first period and then later in the third period.
